    Manna - Autumn 2006

As usual, both scholastic and contemporary commentary from the situation in the Middle East, to Jerusalem, to poetic essays. The depressing situation in Israel is highlighted in R. Bayfields editorial. A very forthright and interesting series of E-mails from Israel to London and back again during the recent war. This is not one of the happiest of the Manna issues but it will give you a good insight into what is going on there. Oye Vey! If it wasn't for R. Willy Wolff's Last Word, I would have slit my throat. There is always hope despite the darkness.

Once again a fine issue; thoughtful editorial by R. Tony Bayfield about exclusive rather than inclusive tendencies with some of our 'fringes.' R. Wily Wolff's excellent Last Word and the literary aspects of The Bible; everything from therapy to poverty issues, from history to options in our lives.

A plea for ;a Judaism which reaches out to all and not for a fundamentalist approach which tends of exclude. Nice feature on England's first female rabbi, Jacqueline Tabick, Palestinian-Israeli relations told through heart-rending story of two families whose children were lost as a result of the conflict; the changing British Jewish community, changes in definitions of God via the new prayerbook by Emeritus Rabbi of the liberal Jewish Synagogue, David Goldberg. and wonderful explication of Bereshit by Shoshana Boyd Gelfand (part of a Reform conference experience), and an insightful essay by Tony Bayfield about dialogue and change for Jews and Christians.

Good editorial by Tony Bayfield on the threat of Iran, and the role of Susan Pollack in kick-starting Operation Solomon, the second Ethiopian exodus, featured along with a fine rememory by Dow Marmur on his old mentor, the late Emil Fackenheim. This is informative and lively reading form cover to cover.
