    The way to remain invisible to be part of any movement which happens to be occurring in your country at any given time. By keeping one's head low, perhaps you will not be detected. Thus it was with Senger's family and later, Senger himself. Harrowing tale but a bit controversial as no attempt is made by the author to justify what happened and his part in it.

    Fragile reproduction (done in l961) of the first issue of the JC. Of historical interest. A bit ponderous in language but lofty in its aspirations. Conservative, of course, and one gets the feeling also that the editors are treading on egg shells.

    All encompassing summary of the roots of the Jewish people from Exodus to Statehood, as well as a synopsis of Jewish literature (Talmudic mostly), basic theories of Judaism an Jewish practices (in terms of religious observance). While all the major events and movements are covered, it's a bit dry as so much has to be presented like the 'Catalogue Aria' from Don Giovanni in order to fit everything in. Some lovely black and white photos including a Jewish book seller from Whitechapel.

A highly readable history, though it can't be that detailed, will still give one a sense of the incredibly long journey we have taken. There are some wonderful pictures included here, notably the great Dome of the Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem which none of us get to see, a synagogue at Caesurae, some very poignant shots of Jews in Russia from the 19th century, and a fine picture of Dr. Chaim Weizmann's inauguration as first president of Israel.
